چکیده

In 1935 Kerpel-Fronius (1) demonstrated in rabbits that there are two distinct types of dehydration, depending upon whether the condition is associated with (1) a primary loss of salt or (2) a shortage of water not accompanied by a corresponding loss of salt. He pointed out that the former is characterized by circulatory disturbances, while the latter is characterized by thirst. In a later paper (2) Kerpel-Fronius referred to the two conditions as " Durstexsikkose und Salzmangelexsikkose " and emphasized the fact that in animals dehydrated by loss of salt the principal loss of fluid is from tfie extracellular portion, including the blood, whereas in thirsting animals the water loss is distributed among all fluid compartments of the body, including the large intracellular portion. It is our impression that most physicians, including ourselves, have not been sufficiently aware of this important distinction and its therapeutic implications. The present report concerns itself with a study of these two types of dehydration in normal human subjects. The first two experiments (IA and IB) deal with abnormal loss of salt while the water intake is adequate. The other two experiments (IIA and IIB) deal with water deprivation with no abnormal loss of salt.

Osmotic dehydration of anchovy fillets in salt solution: Optimization by using statistical experimental design

Anchovy fillets that had undergone osmotic dehydration and response surface methodology (RSM) were used to determine the influence and optimal values of the process variables. Also the optimal processing conditions were determined in order to reduce the solid gain and water loss ratio (SG/WL) and firmnessfor the anchovy fillets. A three-levelcentral composite rotatabledesign (CCRD) involving th...

Water deprivation and the double- depletion hypothesis: common neural mechanisms underlie thirst and salt appetite.

Water deprivation-induced thirst is explained by the double-depletion hypothesis, which predicts that dehydration of the two major body fluid compartments, the extracellular and intracellular compartments, activates signals that combine centrally to induce water intake. However, sodium appetite is also elicited by water deprivation. In this brief review, we stress the importance of the water-de...

An Investigation of Mass Transfer Phenomena during Osmotic Dehydration of Orange Slices

The osmotic dehydration causes water removing from food and also a soluble solid uptake into thefoodstuffs. However, large penetration of solute into the food becomes a major problem in osmoticdehydration.Pre-coating the food to be dehydrated with an artificial, edible barrier was also explored as a wayto efficiently hinder solute penetration. In this study the effect of edible coating (CMC),co...

Gastric emptying of liquids in rats dehydrated by water deprivation.

The gastric emptying of liquids was investigated in male Wistar rats (8 to 10 weeks old, 210-300 g) dehydrated by water deprivation. In this model of dehydration, weight loss, hematocrit and plasma density were significantly higher in the dehydrated animals than in the control groups after 48 and 72 h of water deprivation (P < 0.05). Three test meals (saline (N = 10), water (N = 10) and a WHO r...
